Frequently Asked Questions

During the first night of the 2-Day Salkantay Trek & Humantay Lake Tour, you'll stay at a campsite in Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). Depending on the service selected, accommodation may be provided in tents, domes, or basic mountain lodges. Nights at this altitude can be very cold, so we strongly recommend bringing a suitable sleeping bag and warm clothing.

The trek can be suitable for travelers without previous trekking experience, provided they have a reasonable level of physical fitness. The route includes challenging uphill sections, particularly the ascent toward the Salkantay Pass at approximately 4,650 m (15,256 ft). Beginners should ideally prepare with shorter hikes and spend at least one day acclimatizing in Cusco before starting this high-altitude adventure.

Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek does not require the same type of special trekking permit. However, entrance fees may apply at certain areas along the route, including access to Humantay Lake and the Salkantay trail. These fees are normally included in organized tours, but we recommend confirming what is included in your booking before departure.

Horse rental may be available at certain sections of the route, particularly on demanding uphill sections. Availability and prices can vary depending on local conditions. A horse can be useful for travelers who experience fatigue or have difficulty managing the high altitude, although it is best to confirm availability with your tour operator before departure.

The Salkantay Trek & Humantay Lake 2-Day Tour is considered moderate to challenging. The main difficulty comes from the high altitude, steep sections, and the ascent toward the Salkantay Pass at 4,650 m (15,256 ft). Previous trekking experience is not mandatory, but good physical condition and proper acclimatization in Cusco are strongly recommended.

We recommend spending at least 1–2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek. Stay well hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, eat light meals, and maintain a comfortable pace during the hike. If you experience severe symptoms of altitude sickness, inform your guide immediately and follow their safety recommendations.

We recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothing, comfortable trekking boots, a small backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a reusable water bottle, energy snacks, and a suitable sleeping bag. Trekking poles can also provide additional stability on steep and uneven sections of the trail.
